| Eyelid (Blepharoplasty) Surgery The eyes are often the first thing people notice about your face, and are an important aspect of facial appearance. As we mature, upper and / or lower eyelids may become "droopy" or "baggy" because the eyelid skin stretches, muscles weaken, and fat pockets bulge and become more prominent. Your eyebrows also may sag or droop as part of this same process, and this adds to the excess tissue in the upper eyelids. Aesthetically, such conditions may detract from the overall attractiveness of one's eyes and cause a "tired" or older appearance. When severe, these conditions also may cause functional problems, such as impaired field of vision (baggy upper eyelids) or difficulty wearing glasses (baggy lower eyelids). These eyelid problems are treated with a procedure called Blepharoplasty. Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure done under local anesthetic. An injection is given to numb the eyelids, and the patient may be awake or lightly sedated. The eyelids are surgically tightened, and excess fatty tissue or skin is removed or repositioned. Risks of the procedure include, but are not limited to, bleeding, infection, scar, need for further surgery and dryness of the eyes. These are unusual, but all patients experience swelling, bruising, and approximately one week of limitation in exercise activity. Bruising and swelling lasts one to three weeks. Makeup may be worn in seven to ten days. |
